Don't Toss It, Sell It: Where to List Your Stuff Online

Not everything that leaves your home has to be a donation. Sometimes what's in that pile is genuinely worth something, and a little extra cash back in your pocket makes the whole decluttering process feel even better. Here's where I point clients to look, and how I help them decide if it's worth the effort.

When selling is worth your time (and when it isn't)

My rule of thumb: if it would take more than ten minutes to list, price, and answer messages about, and it's worth less than $20, it's usually faster, and just as satisfying, to donate. Selling makes the most sense for furniture, designer or barely-worn clothing, kids' gear, and anything with real resale value.

For clothing and smaller items

Poshmark and ThredUp are great for clothing you want to hand off without dealing with buyers directly — ThredUp will even mail you a bag to fill and ship. eBay still works beautifully for anything niche or collectible.

For furniture and bigger household items

Facebook Marketplace is still the fastest way to move furniture locally. Post it in the evening, and you'll often have a pickup arranged by morning. NextDoor's Buy Nothing groups are wonderful too, especially if you'd rather gift something to a neighbor than deal with pricing it. OfferUp is a solid backup for anything Marketplace doesn't move quickly.

How I help clients decide

When I'm working through a space with someone, we sort into piles as we go — keep, donate, sell, toss — and the "sell" pile only holds things genuinely worth the extra step.

Everything else moves on quickly, because the goal isn't to squeeze every last dollar out of your closet. It's to get your home working for you again.

However you send it off, the important part is that it's actually leaving your home instead of sitting in a bag by the door for another season.
