Organizing Small Closets in Older North Jersey Homes (Without a Reno)
If you live in one of North Jersey's beautiful older homes — the pre-war colonials, the cozy Cape Cods — you already know the trade-off. Character, charm, hardwood floors... and closets that seem to have been designed for a completely different century of belongings.
The good news: you don't need to knock down a wall to fix this. You just need the right system.
Go vertical before you go wider
Most older closets are shallow and short on shelving, but tall. Adding a second hanging rod, over-door organizers, or additional shelving can nearly double your usable space without touching the structure.
Rethink what "belongs" in the closet
Not everything needs to live in the bedroom closet. Off-season coats, extra linens, or rarely-
used bags can move to a hall closet, under-bed storage, or a labeled bin elsewhere in the home, freeing up prime real estate for what you actually reach for daily.
Use every inch of the door
An over-the-door shoe organizer isn't just for shoes — it's wonderful for scarves, belts, jewelry, or even cleaning supplies in a hall closet. In a small space, the back of the door is prime real estate.
Edit before you organize
This matters more in a small closet than anywhere else. A great system can't fix a closet holding three seasons' worth of clothes it wasn't built for. Start by being honest about what you actually wear, then build the system around what's left.
Small closets are one of my favorite challenges! There's something so satisfying about making a tiny space work hard for you.
The truth is, your home's charm doesn't have to come with chaos.
