The Fall Closet Swap: A No-Stress System for Storing Summer & Unpacking Sweaters
Every September, I get some version of the same message: "My closet is a disaster, I can't find anything, and I don't even know what season it is anymore." The fall closet swap doesn't have to be a whole weekend ordeal. Here's the simple system I use with clients to make it fast, and dare I say, kind of satisfying.
Pull everything out, sort as you go
Take everything off the rod and out of the drawers in one go. As you handle each piece, sort into four quick piles: keep for fall, store for next summer, and donate.
Store summer with intention
Fold, don't cram, your summer clothes into clearly labeled bins — "summer tops," "swim & shorts," whatever makes sense for your life. If you're tight on space, under-bed bins or a high closet shelf work great. The label is the whole trick here; it's the difference between a system and a mystery box.
Let go of anything that didn't earn its spot this summer
If a piece sat in your closet all season and never made it onto your body, that's information. Add it to the donate pile without guilt — someone else might actually wear it this year.
Bring in fall with a plan, not a pile
As you unpack sweaters and jackets, hang or fold them into the space you just freed up, by category. Thirty minutes now will save you from an "everything on the floor" situation come November.
The goal isn't a perfect closet, start with one shelf if that's all you have time for — it still counts.
