The Summer Camp Gear System to End the Morning Scramble

Camp mornings. You know the ones. It's 8:15, the bus comes at 8:45, one kid can't find their water bottle, the other swears their bathing suit was "just right here," and you're somehow also making lunches and signing a permission slip. Sound familiar? You're not alone.

The good news is, it doesn't have to be this way. A simple camp gear system is genuinely life-changing.

Create a dedicated camp zone

The first step is giving camp stuff its own home. This doesn't need to be fancy — a section of your mudroom, a few hooks by the back door, a designated shelf in a closet, or even a large basket.

The key is that everything camp-related lives in one spot. Backpack, towel, sunscreen, extra clothes, the whole lineup. Give it a home, and it can actually be put away (and found) reliably.

The night-before pack ritual

This is the single habit that will transform your mornings: pack the bag the night before. I know it sounds simple, but it’s a game-changer. Make it part of your kids' wind-down routine after dinner: they pack their bags and set them in the camp zone. Younger kids might need help with a visual checklist on the wall. Older kids can do it independently once the habit is set.

The Friday reset

At the end of each camp week, do a 10-minute reset. Empty the bag completely, wash what needs washing, restock sunscreen and snacks, and reset the zone for Monday. Do this Friday afternoon or evening before the weekend kicks in. Future-you on Sunday night will be so grateful.

Systems like these work for the summer and beyond. The same principles apply to school year backpacks, sports gear, you name it. If you’d love help setting up systems that make your family’s daily routines feel a little less like herding cats, I’m here for it.

Let's create some calm together.
