Hosting Rosh Hashanah? Organize Your Kitchen Before the Guests Arrive

There's a particular kind of chaos that hits a kitchen in the days before Rosh Hashanah. Every burner is in use, the fridge is playing Tetris with brisket and side dishes, and somewhere in the middle of it all, you're also supposed to be feeling reflective and grateful. I get it. Let's make the kitchen part easier, so you actually get to enjoy the holiday you're working so hard to host.

Clear the fridge before you fill it

A day or two before you start cooking, do a quick fridge sweep. Toss anything expired, consolidate condiments, and make room by moving rarely used items to a cooler in the garage or basement if you have one. An empty shelf or two makes a world of difference once the trays start arriving.

Create a "staging zone" for serving pieces

Pull out every platter, serving spoon, and honey dish you'll need and group them in one spot — a clear counter, the dining table, wherever makes sense. When it's time to plate, you're not digging through three cabinets mid-meal looking for the challah board.

Set up an easy system for the extra folding chairs

If your table grows every year (I know mine does), designate one spot — a closet, the garage — as "chair headquarters." That way, chairs go back to the same place after the holiday instead of becoming a permanent living room fixture until Sukkot.

Give yourself one uncluttered surface

Whatever you do, protect one counter or table as a no-clutter zone through the whole prep process. Somewhere your eyes can land that isn't covered in mixing bowls. It sounds small, but it genuinely keeps the whole kitchen feeling calmer.

A calm kitchen makes for a calmer host, and a calmer host can actually be present for the holiday.

Shanah Tovah, and happy hosting!
