Bills mixed with catalogs. Important documents buried under junk. Things you meant to deal with... eventually.


The truth is, that pile isn't going anywhere until you have a system. And the good news? The system is simpler than you think.


Step 1: Sort Out Junk Right Away


This is the game-changer: deal with junk mail immediately.


Standing at the counter when you bring in the mail? Toss the junk right then. Don't set it down "just for now." Don't add it to the pile.


Junk mail has one destination: recycling. The faster you get it there, the less visual clutter you're dealing with.


Step 2: Use a Confidential Stamp


Here's a tip that changed everything for my clients: get a confidential stamp.


You know those papers with your name and address that you don't want to just toss?


Instead of letting them pile up until you have time to shred, stamp over the important info, and recycle them immediately.


No more waiting for the shredder. No more guilt about the growing stack.


Step 3: Have a Designated Spot


This is non-negotiable: your mail needs one home.


Some people love the Sunday Basket method—a container where all incoming paper lives until you sort it. Others prefer a simple box or basket.


It doesn't matter what it looks like. What matters is that it's always in the same spot, and everyone in your house knows where it is.


When mail has a home, it stops migrating to every surface in your kitchen.


Step 4: Create a Weekly Routine


Here's the piece that makes it all stick: a weekly mail routine.


Pick one day (Sunday works great, but any day is fine) and spend 15 minutes sorting through your mail spot. Pay bills, file what needs filing, and recycle what you don't need.
